Question: Do I need to get a referral from a GP (General Practitioner) to see a
chiropractor?
Answer: Because Chiropractors are Primary Contact Health Practitioners you do not
need a referral, and you can just call to make an appointment.
Question: Does Medicare cover chiropractic?
Answer: Given the growing evidence for chiropractic and acceptance into mainstream
science, Medicare has begun to cover small amounts of Chiropractic care. This is only available if you have
an Allied Health Plan for chronic problems and your GP has added Chiropractic to this plan. This requires
paperwork to be completed by your GP and Chiropractor, but can usually be organised through your GP if you
have a chronic musculoskeletal problem. Medicare will probably only cover your first 1-5 sessions per year
and only if Chiropractic deemed a higher priority in your treatment plan by your GP than all other complementary
health providers. You are able to let your GP know your preference of complementary health services also
provide names, and have your plan tailored with this in mind.
Question: How much will I get back from my private health cover?
Answer: Different plans will rebate different amounts, anywhere from 100% to 20%.
Most will rebate 30-60% of the fee. If you have used up your yearly quota already there may be no further
benefit until the new year or financial year, and if your extras cover is newly acquired, there may be a
waiting period to serve. Check beforehand with your private health care provider, or alternatively bring your
health care card to your appointment and you’ll find out on the day when using our high caps machine.
