Who can benefit from seeing a chiropractor?
People from all walks of life benefit from seeing Chiropractors, and for a variety of reasons.
Many of these people have particular physical challenges they face repetitively in their day to day
life. Others come in to deal with a more traumatic one off injury, while others still come in for a
spinal check up, preventative care or to enhance their performance and health. While physical stressors
are most directly linked to spinal problems, chemical or nutritional stressors as well as emotional
stressors can also affect the nervous system.
- Babies may start their life with a particularly challenging birth process, which
may stress the spine, causing a neurological disturbance. This is called a Vertebral subluxation and
it is locatable and correctable by Chiropractor. The birth process, even under natural and controlled
conditions, is often traumatic and can stress a still developing spine. Modern obstetric practices,
such as birthing the babies with the mother lying on her back, the use of forceps, suction, induction
and epidurals may subject the infant to significant trauma. Inadequate neck support with early handling
may be another factor. Chiropractors also find that infantile colic may have association with poor
spinal function (subluxations), perhaps leading to gastrointestinal problems.
- Kinder: colic and bed wetting have responded well to Chiropractic care as shown by
the research. Falls can be severe enough to deteriorate normal joint motion and almost 50% of children
have fallen on their head at some stage. Learning to walk can lead to repetitive smaller falls, which
can take their toll on a developing spine.
- School aged children carry heavy back packs to and from school, sports accidents and
injuries, slouching on the couch watching TV, often causes their posture to compensate creating adverse
patterns in their spines, neck tension from many hours sitting at desk, mental pressure of studying and
exams or friendship problems can overwhelm their nervous systems. Students generally find they can
concentrate better when their nerve systems are clear and so we see a number of them seeking extra
Chiropractic care around exam time, as it seems to help them focus more and get results. Many school
aged children need to be monitored for progression of a congenital scoliosis.
- Parents end up constant bending, lifting and reaching in awkward positions to
care for young children. This causes repetitive stress injuries to their spines on a daily basis.
With the often intense and unrelenting demands children place on their parents, and in the early days
inevitable sleep deprivation, there is no wonder emotional and mental stress can accumulate so rapidly
in this environment.
- Executives & professionals: sell their time and talent with enormous cost of health
robbing stress effects. Besides excessive sitting, with its known sedentary lifestyle risks, they are
further burdened by dealines and poor eating habits, which places further stress on their bodies and minds.
Other professionals like dentists and surgeons are constantly leaning over their clients and fatiguing
their necks and backs.
- Office workers often lack regular and sufficient activity and suffer from poor postural
habits. Sitting or standing all day, often without many stretch breaks, can lead to spinal stress. The
stress of high intensity mental and intellectual pressure magnifies many health issues too.
- Factory/hospitality workers often have to repeat similar movements, and can place unnatural
stress on specific areas of the spine, causing premature wear and tear, as well as forcing compensations
in other areas, creating secondary problems, not to mention the mental stress of often monotonous and
repetitive duties.
- Drivers are stuck in a sedentary position for long hours, which is not healthy for the
spine. They are often climbing in and out of the vehicle, in a rush. Their quest for fulfilling deadlines
against the ever changing traffic conditions confronts them with significant mental and emotional stress too.
- Seniors have accumulated years of work, family and other activities. Their bodies
accumulate a lot of physical, chemical, mental and emotional stress from full lives, which they have not
been able to fully adapt to. Often will have accumulated some arthritis, and they may have a reasonable
history of falls and injuries their body is compensating for. While earlier is far better than later; It's
never to late to discover the benefits of Chiropractic.
- Athletes work to maximise their fitness, and strive to push their bodies to new limits.
Unfortunately this process is often carried out incorrectly. However, even if the activity is performed carefully,
pre-existing stress patterns can mean that even a proper workout can unknowingly create serious spinal problems.
Pushing their bodies beyond their comfort limits can create newfound stress, not just from the physical pressures,
also from the mental strain, and sometimes lacking appropriate nutrients to compensate for their above-the-norm efforts.
- Pregnancy: is a period of rapid development whereby a forward shift of the centre of gravity
often causes excessive stress and inflammation to the lumbar spine. Hormonal changes cause laxity of connective
tissues. Many pregnant women experience unnecessary low back pain. The Chiropractor during pregnancy is safe and
effective. The Chiropractor will take precautions during the pregnancy to make sure you are comfortable, and
chiropractic techniques will be altered to suit your changing body. Many Chiropractic patients report a smoother
and shorter delivery when compared to their deliveries before their Chiropractic care.
- Post surgery: Chiropractic can be used safely after spinal surgery, where care will be taken to work
on the joints above and below that often have to work harder after surgery.
